About Double Trouble State Park

Located in Ocean County, New Jersey, Double Trouble State Park preserves roughly 1,085 acres of coastal pine barrens, wetlands, and restored cranberry bogs. The park is named after the historic Double Trouble Company, once a prominent cranberry and sawmill operation established in the late 19th century. Visitors can explore the remains of the old company village, including restored buildings, a visitor center, and interpretive exhibits that share the story of the area's unique cultural and natural history. Ecologically, the park features the rare Pine Barrens ecosystem with pitch pine and scrub oak forests, which serve as habitat for diverse wildlife including migratory birds, amphibians, and the endangered Pine Barrens tree frog. Several miles of trails wind through forest, marsh, and alongside cranberry bogs, offering opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography. The park’s trails also connect with the nearby Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, extending exploration potential. Canoeing and fishing are accessible in several freshwater areas and nearby Barnegat Bay estuary. Educational programs and seasonal events are held regularly, drawing families and nature enthusiasts. The park’s mixture of natural environments and preserved industrial history makes it a compelling destination for understanding New Jersey’s Pine Barrens region. Its ease of access from major highways combined with well-maintained facilities invites visitors year-round for outdoor recreation, history, and ecological appreciation.
